Bolton students showcased their cooking ambition, creativity, and skills to potential employers, as part of Bolton Council’s ambition to develop Supported Internship opportunities for young people.

Rumworth employment event 2023 2Last week, young people from Rumworth School and LifeBridge joined chef Mike Harrison to design, cook and serve a delicious three-course meal.

From conception to completion pupils delivered the event to an exceptionally high standard.

Pupils designed menus, provided restaurant standard waiting experience and created food masterpieces including a Tiramisu served in a seed pot to represent “Growing together”.

During the event, local employers heard more about the planned supported Internship offer and how to get involved.

They also had the chance to talk to employers already engaged with Rumworth School and LifeBridge to learn about the many benefits these young people can bring to the workplace.

Supported Internships are part of Bolton Council’s ambition to begin to provide work experience and study programmes for young people who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

It is envisaged that support will be provided by a school or college, an employer, and a job coach to develop essential workplace skills.

There is an expectation that a supported internship will lead to a job at the end of the programme.

Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Martin Donaghy, said:

“We want to give every young person in Bolton the best possible start in life and that includes equipping them with the skills to find long-term, fulfilling work.

“Our planned Supported Internships are part of this wider commitment to identifying opportunities and supporting young people into employment.

“This event was an excellent way to engage with local employers and showcase the skills of Rumworth pupils.”

Jane Haslam, Principal of LifeBridge and Assistant Head of Rumworth School said:

“We are incredibly proud of our young people and their ambitions and aspirations towards achieving meaningful employment.

"This event provided a great opportunity to showcase their fantastic transferable work-related skills and talents to employers within our local community. “
