Volunteer groups and organisations across the borough are coming together to celebrate their green spaces over a two-day event.

The Festival of Community Gardens and Green Spaces, organised by Bolton Green Umbrella, is a weekend of open community gardens, allotments, and green spaces across Bolton on 22 and 23 July 2023.

Residents are invited to come along and an online map showing the locations of all the participating sites can be viewed on the Bolton Green Umbrella website.

The map also has links to the websites of several nature trails and walks.

Some of the green spaces will include volunteer guides and activities as well as refreshments.

Cllr Richard Silvester, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environmental Services, said:

“The Bolton Green Umbrella team have done a wonderful job bringing this event together.

“From community gardens to nature reserves, this celebration of green spaces will bring Bolton residents into places they may not even have been aware of.

“We all know the benefits of getting outside on physical health and mental wellbeing, and this event is a fantastic way for the whole family to enjoy the great outdoors.

“The council fully supports Bolton Green Umbrella and community events like these as part of our commitment to making our borough a cleaner and greener place to live.”

Barbara Hackett, Volunteer at Bolton Green Umbrella, said:

“We are saddened when some people run down our town.

“We want to dispel that image by drawing attention to the wealth of green spaces we have, and the love people have for them.

“This is demonstrated by the army of volunteers who work tirelessly for their community and their environment.”
